Fence Update

This is a quick update on what the front boundary of Lizard Rock looked like in the middle of July, 2007.

The newest stretch of our front fence, including the carved lizard and house number on the stone wall and Slick's business sign on one panel. Freshly turned and manured garden beds lie along the top of the stone wall, at the base of the fenceline, waiting to be planted.

That's the neighbour's house in the distance and no, that is not our vehicle!

Principles of Design

'Shape the house so that light can enter every important room from at least two sides to create a balance.'

'A house and its site should be shaped so that the main flow of traffic moves along the edges of the common rooms, exposed to the activity within but not a part of it.'

'Give the commons a semiprivate edge, with places to sit and read or even just lean - places that allow people to take up a position away from the core but still be a part of it.'

'Contrast the various materials of construction, clarifying the connections among them, and celebrate the innate qualities of each rather than covering them up.'

'A home should have a number of secure, protected places that also permit an overview of the larger world beyond.'
